On October 18 EASE, European Association for Storage of Energy, presented its energy storage technology roadmap. This document gives an overview of the energy storage technologies that are being developed in Europe at this very moment and the demand of R&D on this subject in the following years. Based on this recommendations are made for the European R&D-strategy and adjustment of laws and regulations for energy storage. These adjustments are necessary to realize the large-scale roll-out of energy storage. The roadmap has been written to inform policymakers about the actions that have to be taken in the field of research, innovation and demonstration projects in the energy sector in order to further strengthen the competitive position of European industry and European research.

Six policy recommendations are presented in the report:

  1. Create space in laws and regulations to test innovative, unprecedented demonstration projects for energy storage for technical feasibility and applications in the market.
  2. Anchoring a definition for energy storage in European policy.
  3. Create clear rules on how energy storage can be deployed in different markets – particularly with regard to the role and rights of transmission and distribution system operators (TSOs and DSOs).
  4. Coordinate the removal of double energy tax and the discussion about network costs at European level.
  5. Determine that purchasing energy and related services is market-based and subject to a cost-benefit analysis.
  6. Store energy storage as a separate category, alongside generation, transmission/distribution and consumption. Only in this way is the unique aspect of energy storage fixed in relation to the other categories.
