Masterclass: The ethics and governance of large-scale energy storage: what you should know and why you should care

A key objective of RELEASE is to create fundamental scientific insights and to develop, implement and demonstrate technological solutions for large-scale storage of energy. An important contribution to accelerating the development, implementation and demonstration of such technological solutions can be made by appropriate ethical and governance frameworks.

But what is ethics and what is governance, and why should those involved in technological innovation actually care? In this masterclass, we address the question why and how to integrate issues of ethics and governance in developing, implementing and demonstrating technological solutions. We discuss key notions such as responsible innovation, value sensitive design, and energy justice, as well as strategic management, network governance, and energy democracy.

We examine – together with masterclass participants – what these notions could mean in the context of RELEASE. Our aim is to show the importance of ethics and governance as dimensions that need to be dealt with pro-actively and continuously, beyond merely preventing delays in the development, implementation and demonstration of technological solutions, such as those for large-scale storage of energy.
