ElaadNL and FAN Foundation launch project for interoperability in energy management homes

ElaadNL and FAN Foundation, supported by the Ministry of Climate and Energy, have launched a new initiative to improve the interoperability of energy management systems (HEMS) and energy-intensive appliances in homes. The aim of this project is to provide households with more flexibility and enable them to actively contribute to a stable and sustainable energy system.

In response to a previous research a limited set of open standards was chosen in the base, namely OpenADR for communication between energy system and home, and S2, EEBus, Matter, Modbus and OCPP for communication with devices in and around the home. The follow-up project proposes resources (financial andin child) available to parties willing to work on developing, testing, demonstrating and deploying interoperability solutions, both in terms of (open source) software and hardware.

In preparation for the project, ElaadNL and FAN are now gathering input through a so-called Request for Information (RfI). With the RFI, the initiators want to identify how best to set up technical specifications, development approaches, testing strategies and collaboration models to achieve interoperability. This call targets manufacturers, developers, EMS parties and aggregators who want to share their expertise and help shape the next steps.

Interested parties have until May 26 to respond via an online form (link below). The input received will be used to prepare a detailed Request for Proposal (RFP), which will be published in late June. Following this, the goal is to begin solution development in September 2025.

More information and the opportunity to submit comments on the RFI can be found at: Faster to interoperability of energy management in homes - ElaadNL
