ESNL strengthens regional team to support local energy storage issues

The month of June at Energy Storage NL (ESNL) is dedicated to "Permits and Storage Sites Month," a campaign series to draw more attention to permits from municipalities and provinces in the storage sector.

Energy transition is increasingly taking shape at the regional and local level. Provinces, municipalities and energy regions are increasingly faced with complex questions about how to set up a sustainable energy system. One of the themes that is rapidly gaining importance in this regard is energy storage. To better respond to the increasing need for knowledge and support in this area, Energy Storage NL joins the regional team active within the umbrella organizations NVDE, Holland Solar, Energie Nederland, Netbeheer Nederland and Nedzero.

Local issues require specialized support

Whereas at the beginning of the energy transition the emphasis was primarily on the large-scale rollout of renewable generation (solar and wind), attention is now shifting increasingly to issues of balance, flexibility and grid load. Energy storage plays a crucial role in this. The urgency is growing: grid congestion is hampering new connections, peak loads are increasing and the use of locally generated energy is under pressure.

Provinces and municipalities are actively seeking solutions, but increasingly find themselves confronted with complex technical, spatial and financial issues. Consider the integration of batteries in residential neighborhoods, combining storage with solar or wind at business parks, or organizing flexibility in regional energy systems.

Addition of knowledge and network on storage

As a representative of the energy storage sector, Energy Storage NL is keen to share its substantive knowledge on storage technology, market development and policy frameworks at the local level. By joining the regional team, this knowledge can be used in a targeted way to support local governments in making strategic choices and realizing projects.

Jeroen Neefs - Director Energy Storage NL: "We notice that provinces and municipalities increasingly have questions about the role of storage in their region. With our participation in the regional team, we want to actively support them on issues from vision creation to project development. By thinking along at an early stage, we can prevent bottlenecks and together build a future-proof energy infrastructure through energy storage, among other things."

The regional team: cooperation and support in the region

The regional team aims to assist regional governments in their role in the energy transition. Through knowledge sharing, collaboration and provision of expertise, the team supports provinces, municipalities and energy regions in policy making and implementation. The team is active in Regional Energy Strategies (RES), networking groups and meetings, among others, and works closely with relevant stakeholders.

The Energy Storage NL team has expanded with the arrival of Susanna Stam as project manager. Susanna focuses on storage sites and permits and takes a seat on the regional team on behalf of ESNL.
