Standardization of home battery safety launched by end of this year
Home batteries are popping up like mushrooms. They are increasingly becoming part of people's home energy supply, in part to respond to dynamically varying electricity costs and to use more of their own solar power. To ensure the safety and reliability of these systems, Energy Storage NL (ESNL) considers the development of standards for home batteries of great importance.
From a inventory of Dutch standards institute NEN shows that there is a broad need for a national standard for home batteries. A standards document can provide clarity for manufacturers, installers and consumers, thereby increasing the mutual trust needed to further grow the market.
The scope of the intended document focuses specifically on the (fire) safety of these systems, covering installation, management, maintenance, environment and use. Depending on the wishes of the stakeholders, this scope can still be adjusted. It is not yet clear what type of document it should be (NTA, NPR or NEN standard). Depending on the wishes of stakeholders, this scope may still be adjusted.
In a separate track, NEN is starting the development of an NTA focused on "smart grid-intensive devices," dealing with the impact on the power grid. Work is also underway at the European level on harmonized product standards that give substance to the EU Battery Regulation (2024), which addresses, among other things, the product safety of the battery itself.
ESNL emphasizes that this initiative can only be successful through a concerted effort by the industry. Therefore, the industry association calls on market parties - from manufacturers and suppliers to installers and end users - to join the development of this standard.
The first step is a foundation meeting in which the way of working and roles will be defined. The process, which will be facilitated by NEN, is expected to take at least a year and requires commitment from interested parties willing to actively participate.
