Bomhofsplas BESS officially live: more flexibility for Dutch power grid

Zwolle - Green Energy Storage (GES) officially commissioned the battery energy storage system (BESS) at Bomhofsplas in Zwolle.
A BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) is a large-scale battery energy storage system that temporarily stores electricity and later releases it to the grid. In doing so, it balances the supply and demand for power, supports the stability of the power grid and allows more renewable energy such as solar and wind power to be used efficiently.
This milestone will make additional flexibility available on the Dutch power grid, allowing more renewable energy to be integrated and alleviating grid congestion.

Strong link between solar and storage

The system has a capacity of 11MW and a storage capacity of 22MWh. Thanks to its direct connection to the floating solar farm Bomhofsplas (27 MWp, operational since 2020), locally generated solar power can be efficiently stored and deployed later when electricity demand is highest. The battery provides services such as balancing, congestion management and grid stability. Thus, the project contributes directly to a safer, more efficient and more sustainable operation of the Dutch energy system.

Cooperation between strong partners

The project is an initiative of Green Energy Storage (GES) and was realized in cooperation with:

  • Energiefonds Overijssel (EFO).
  • Greenchoice
  • Dekker Group
  • Privatis (electrical installations and integration)
  • Blue Finger Energy

From idea to operation in one year

The project is distinguished not only by the unique coupling of a battery to a floating solar park on an active sand mining site, but also by its exceptionally short lead time:
- October 2024 - Financial close completed
- December 2024 - Start of construction
- April 2025 - Supply battery containers
- June 2025 - Connection to existing grid connection and solar farm
- August 2025 - Performance tests and joint control of solar farm + battery
- September 2025 - Official commissioning of EOS Bomhofsplas
Within just 12 months of financial completion, the battery was made operational, a testament to decisive collaboration and the speed at which large-scale energy storage can contribute to a more robust energy system.

Quotes

Guus Bensch, CEO & Founder Green Energy Storage (GES):
"With EOS Bomhofsplas, we are concretely adding flexibility where the system demands it. This is an important step toward a robust and future-proof grid."

Nienke Rijpstra, Investment Director Energiefonds Overijssel:
"With an existing grid connection and double use of land, Bomhofsplas is an ideal location. The battery has been installed on the site of the sand extraction site, which means that no agricultural land or nature has to give way for this project. We are pleased that in addition to the solar park at Bomhofsplas, we can now also contribute to energy storage here."
