Energy Storage NL in talks with municipalities about energy storage
Energy transition requires cooperation between market, government and knowledge players. ESNL is therefore actively engaging with provinces, municipalities, lawyers and other local policymakers on the role of energy storage in the future energy system.
Battery storage on Environmental Law Day
Last Tuesday, ESNL was on stage at the Omgevingswetdag, organized by law firm Pels Rijcken and the NVDE. During a partial session on battery storage, introduced and moderated by Susanna Stam (ESNL project manager), we discussed with two of our member organizations - Windunie and Pure Energie - the permit processes of two realized storage projects. In addition, a municipal official presented the battery consideration framework applied within their municipality. With a room full of lawyers, provincial and municipal policy makers, a valuable discussion ensued about the opportunities and bottlenecks in current licensing practice.
NPRES Congress
On Wednesday, Jeroen Neefs participated on a panel on behalf of ESNL during the NPRES Congress Regional Energy and Local Heat. Together with TenneT and the municipality of Oosterhout, ESNL shared its vision around large-scale battery storage. Together with local officials, they discussed what is needed in the search for suitable storage sites and the unification of permitting criteria. ESNL's call is to formulate future-proof policy for energy storage and to address this jointly, especially in a regional context. It was also said that not only battery storage but also local heat storage should be considered.
Moving forward together
We will only realize the transition to a sustainable energy system together. Everyone looks at it from their own role and responsibility, whether they are a policy maker, grid manager, lawyer or project developer. This is precisely why it is important to remain open to each other's perspective, while at the same time seeking the connection and maintaining an active dialogue.
These sessions were a valuable step in this, and ESNL remains committed to strengthening and connecting this dialogue.
