Storage coalition calls for clear ambition for energy storage
Last Friday, the Storage Coalition presented its joint formation paper - bearing the logos of all signatories - to the informateur, forming parties and various stakeholders. In doing so, we collectively support one clear message: energy storage is indispensable for the Netherlands to gain momentum.
The Dutch energy supply is reaching its limits. Thousands of projects are waiting to be connected, residential areas are stagnating and the costs for households and businesses are rising. Annually, grid problems cost our society an estimated €40 billion. Just investing in grid reinforcement is not enough. A future-proof energy system requires flexibility and large-scale energy storage.
With batteries, heat buffers and hydrogen storage, we can better accommodate peaks and troughs, reduce pressure on the grid and stabilize energy costs. This will create room again for housing construction, innovation and affordable sustainability.
The Storage Coalition sees that the Netherlands is lagging behind surrounding countries and that without clear direction, the potential of energy storage remains untapped. That is why we are calling for action:
-
Set a clear storage ambition for 2030 and 2050, anchored in the National Energy System Program, among others.
-
Develop a policy strategy Energy Storage as a follow-up to the Energy Storage Roadmap.
-
Work on a shared implementation agenda with government, ACM, grid operators and the storage industry.
With these steps, we can reduce grid congestion, keep energy affordable and make security of supply more sustainable. The concrete elaboration of these points can be found in the National Energy Storage Action Plan of Energy Storage NL.
