Retrospective Energy Storage Conference

The Energy Storage Conference was held on Thursday, March 19, with a broad and engaged audience including fire departments, environmental services, policy makers and market participants. The day was dedicated to knowledge sharing, dialogue and further development of the energy storage safety framework.

During the plenary opening, the day was kicked off by chairman Peter Melis, followed by an interview with Afke van Rijn (DG Environment and International, Ministry of IenW). This was followed by a keynote on the legal assurance of PGS 37-1 and PGS 37-2 by Stefan Kortekaas, Koen Broess and Sander Gleijm.

In the first round of sessions, Energy Storage NL provided an interactive session on the 2025 market research. In it, the main bottlenecks for the development of the energy storage market were discussed, as well as the reasons why this development is currently not moving fast enough. The session led to valuable discussions with participants from different parts of the chain.

Interesting insights also emerged throughout the day. For example, it became clear that the safety of energy storage systems is looked at from different perspectives - ranging from operational safety and incident response to spatial integration and policy frameworks. This underscores the importance of an integrated approach, in which cooperation between market parties, governments and safety regions is essential.

In the afternoon, Ewout Deurwaarder (European Commission, DG GROW) gave a keynote on the European Batteries Regulation. During the plenary closing, Lieke Broekhuizen (Ministry of IenW) addressed the follow-up process of the legislative process, after which the day ended with a joint wrap-up.

In addition, it was announced that on Friday, March 27, the formal internet consultation will start for the inclusion of the PGS in the Decree on activities in the living environment (Bal). As soon as it comes online, Energy Storage NL will actively communicate this to its members.
