Cybersecurity for energy storage - kick-off meeting

Several parties expressed a desire to gain a better understanding of various cyber security topics. There is a need for a clear overview of the national and international guidelines applicable to IT (NIS2), OT (e.g. EN62443), IoT Radio Equipment Directive/EN18031, the Cyber Resilience Act, the IEC62443 standard, ISO and other relevant standards, as well as cybersecurity from a technical perspective. In addition, there is a desire to jointly identify the steps needed to comply with these standards and guidelines.

To meet this need, ESNL has established the following program. At June 6 there will be from 14.30-16.30 hour to hold a digital working group meeting on the topic of cyber security for energy storage.

Draft agenda

  • Presentation FME: FME is active in several areas and can support industry associations. During this session they will discuss recent European developments in cybersecurity and explain their lobbying activities in The Hague. There will also be a general explanation of NIS2, CRA and other directives, with an inventory of the need for the platform https://www.samendigitaalveilig.nl/ and https://cyberrating.nl/.
  • Presentation Modelec: Modelec will explain why an IT security approach and associated solutions are not appropriate for OT (process) environments. The "IT vs. OT" presentation will discuss the difference between IT and OT environments, why an IT-based cybersecurity view does not fit within a process environment, what a true process-oriented approach looks like, and the benefits of matching solutions.
  • Presentation Nobleo: Nobleo will elaborate on "Secure Boot within the Chain of Cybersecurity," related to the current standards and guidelines described in NIS2 and the Radio Equipment Directive Directive (RED). In addition, Nobleo develops functionalities for battery-based storage systems, such as central control software, balancing systems and advanced BMS. They have extensive experience with secure boot mechanisms and issuing security certificates within a PKI infrastructure.
  • Identification of further needs.
