Sustainable energy research is one of the focus areas of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research NWO, of which the scientific research institute DIFFER - the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research - is the exponent.

DIFFER conducts fundamental research into new materials, processes and devices needed for a CO2-neutral energy infrastructure. The research covers two major themes: Solar Fuels For storage and conversion of renewable energy to chemical bonds and Fusion Energy as a clean source of energy on Earth.

DIFFER works intensively with academic researchers and R&D at companies and industries. To accelerate innovation in sustainable technology, DIFFER invests in an active, national community working on energy research.
