Ocean Grazer
Worldwide, we are switching massively to energy from sun and wind. But when the sun does not shine or the wind does not blow, no energy is generated. And precisely at the times when we consume energy, renewable energy is not always available. There are also times when the sun shines in full and far too much energy is generated-more than is needed. At those times, wind turbines are shut down and solar panels are turned off to avoid overloading the grid. How sinful is that?
Ocean Grazer is developing an innovative energy storage system based on moving water: AquaVault. Hydropower requires a difference in elevation. In mountainous areas, these elevation differences are naturally present. The uniqueness of our solution is that the elevation difference is created by building a deep shaft. This means that the water does not have to flow down a mountain, but instead flows into a deep underground reservoir.
Surplus renewable energy is used to pump up water. That same water can later be converted back into electricity by passing it past a turbine. In doing so, our system directly balances supply and demand. So it is not a traditional battery. It never runs out and can be charged and discharged indefinitely. It does not use scarce materials such as lithium or cobalt. And best of all, it is completely hidden from view. The flexible bag is placed underwater without harming any aquatic life present. The vertical shaft extends deep into the ground. At the surface, where the shaft enters the ground, is the entrance to the system. By integrating this with respect for nature, the system blends seamlessly into the environment.
The next step? Validating our system - on a large scale. After the successful completion of the prototype in the Eemshaven in Groningen, Ocean Grazer is now working on a first pilot project. In the Northern Netherlands, we are working hard to realize our pilot project, an installation of about 2 MWh.
