The idea of Delta21 is a future-proof solution for the southwestern delta. A solution for Water Safety, Energy Transition & Wildlife Restoration.

Between the coast of the Second Maasvlakte and that of the island of Goeree Overflakkee we are constructing a flood barrier in the form of a row of dunes, a pumping station and a lockable barrier. The dam will create a lake of about 20 km2 at sea, so to speak. The pumping station in the dam has more than enough capacity to pump the excess water into the sea at the highest expected river levels. Together, the dunes and the lockable barrier provide sufficient protection against high sea levels.
