TNO Energy Transition
The ambition of TNO Energy Transition is to accelerate the energy transition together with knowledge institutes, companies and the government so that the Netherlands will have an energy system without CO₂ emissions by 2050. Every day 700 top researchers work on this ambition through independent and internationally leading research in the field of technical, social and policy innovations.
In the future energy system, energy storage will play a crucial role as one of the cost-effective options to provide flexibility to a reliable, affordable and equitable sustainable energy system. A portfolio of solutions is needed with sometimes low power and fast response and small energy volumes (<1 kW, 1 GW; hours to days and beyond). TNO is therefore working on a family of energy storage and conversion technologies to realize the energy transition at acceptable cost. Thereby making smart use of knowledge of all components of the energy system and their interrelationships.
Our activities range from doing literature reviews to deploying knowledge and laboratories such as the 'Energy storage platform' to achieve concrete innovations with companies. We work with and for governments, grid operators, energy companies, technology suppliers, industrial end-users, universities, industry associations, NGOs and numerous other parties involved in the energy transition.
