GIGA Storage Giraffe

GIGA Storage officially opened its third major energy storage project. Located in Amsterdam's Westelijk Haven area, this battery is the largest in the city. The project, called Giraffe, has a power capacity of 10 MW and a storage capacity of 47 MWh.

With Giraffe, sustainably generated energy can be efficiently stored and deployed at times of scarcity. Thus, congestion and imbalance on the grid can be reduced and the reliability of power supply increases.

The project consists of 12 Tesla Megapacks 2XL based on lithium-ion LFP technology with a total capacity of 10MW. Each battery has a power capacity of 3.9 MWh, bringing the total storage capacity to about 47MWh, equivalent to about 800 electric cars. The Giraffe batteries have an expected lifespan of 20 years.

Energy storage currently supplies power to the national grid, helping to balance supply and demand. GIGA Storage and Port of Amsterdam are investigating how it can also be used locally in the future, for example to relieve grid congestion and support local energy contracts with companies in the port, including through Energiecoöperatie Amsterdamse Haven (ECAH). This is a joint venture in the port of Amsterdam in which entrepreneurs work together to create a more stable and sustainable energy system.
