FlexPlus Battery uses grid capacity more efficiently, but the business case remains crucial
Liander is introducing the FlexPlus Battery, a contract that provides companies with additional transmission capacity if they invest in a battery that is also available for congestion management. Energy Storage NL sees this as a promising way to provide companies with capacity more quickly and to use the existing power grid more efficiently.
Additional transport capacity with a battery
This contract type is intended for companies that need additional power but, due to grid congestion, cannot immediately obtain a standard expansion and cannot easily adapt their primary processes. The company invests in a battery that exceeds its own needs. Part of the battery supports the company’s operations; the remainder remains available to the grid operator to limit peak loads on the power grid. In exchange, the company receives a fixed compensation. Liander also points out potential support through programs such as Flex-e and the Energy Investment Deduction (EIA).
Unlocking Flexibility Behind the Meter
If congestion is expected, Liander can call on the battery. According to the product information, the company is notified one day in advance and receives a fixed fee for keeping capacity available, regardless of how often the battery is actually used. In this way, FlexPlus aligns with a broader trend: using flexibility in secondary assets—such as batteries, electric water heaters, CHP units, and hybrid systems—to limit grid congestion without unnecessarily disrupting primary business operations. Research by BlueTerra and Trinomics shows that it is precisely these types of assets that offer significant potential for flexibility, but that complexity, uncertainty, and a business case that is not yet sufficiently sound continue to hinder their implementation.
ESNL: Consider both financial feasibility and social benefits
ESNL welcomes contract models that link investments in energy storage to more efficient use of the power grid. At the same time, the FlexPlus Battery requires a significant investment from companies. For widespread adoption, the fixed fee, contract terms, and value of the additional transmission capacity must collectively result in a viable business case. ESNL therefore advocates for a balancing of interests in which grid operators consider not only direct costs but also societal benefits. These include avoiding or delaying grid investments, providing businesses with a clearer outlook, and ensuring a more efficient use of existing infrastructure. In this way, energy storage can demonstrably contribute to a reliable and affordable energy system.
