Energy Storage NL meets with Minister Van Veldhoven and State Secretary De Bat during an administrative consultation on energy storage

Since its inception, Energy Storage NL has advocated for an integrated approach to the energy system in which generation, storage, transmission, and demand are developed in a coordinated manner. To that end, Energy Storage NL published the position paper ‘A more energy independent Netherlands through energy storage’ presented to both officials. In January, the policy agenda was presented by then-Ministers Hermans announced. Over the past few months, ESNL has been working with the ministry, grid operators, and other stakeholder groups to determine what this policy agenda should look like.

Last week, a policy consultation on energy storage took place with Minister Stientje van Veldhoven and State Secretary Jo Annes de Bat. Together with Energy Storage NL, Netbeheer Nederland, TenneT, the IPO, the VNG, and the ACM, they discussed the role of storage in the energy system, the target for installed storage capacity by 2040, and the measures needed to achieve this target. The meeting thus served as a prelude to the publication of the Comprehensive Energy Storage Policy Agenda later this fall.

The discussion specifically addressed the importance of storage in the energy system and the target of 28 GW of battery storage by 2040. The discussion also covered the energy-related, financial, and spatial conditions necessary to achieve this goal, as well as the scaling up of thermal and molecular storage, other forms of long-duration energy storage (LDES), and the follow-up process before and after the agenda’s publication later this fall.

At the same time, we’re not there yet, and the development of energy storage won’t happen on its own.
